(II). HOW TO PLAY PROTECTED CBFTs?
If you want to watch any commercial and copy protected CBFT (Chessbase Fritz Trainer) DVDs you must run the CBFT patcher and have the correct prot file in your "streams" folder.. You can download the latest version of the CBFT patcher v2.2 (CBFT-Patch.exe) here:
1) Before you run the CBFT-Patch.exe you must have run the CB-K*ygen first to activate your CB or Fritz. If your Chessbase (CB) or Fritz is already activated or you have bought a legitimate version you do not need to do this step. However if you have downloaded a version from here or somewhere else then see the tutorial about activating the software.
2) The CB or Fritz program you are trying to patch must NOT be running or open when you apply the CBFT patch - it must be closed not open.
3) When you run the CBFT patcher make sure you run as administrator - right click and choose run as administrator.
4) The CBFT-Patch.exe must be INSIDE the ChessBase program folder before you run it - unlike the CB K*ygen you can't just run it from your desktop or anywhere. So for ChessBase 17 you need to actually copy/paste the CBFT Patcher into this folder and run it from in there (C:\Program Files\ChessBase\CBase17). For Fritz 17 you need to copy/paste the CBFT Patcher into this folder and then run it from there: C:\Program Files\ChessBase\ChessProgram17).
5) IMPORTANT: as well as running the CBFT patcher, you also need to make sure you put the specific PROT file for the DVD you want to watch into your "streams" folder otherwise it won't work, even after running the CBFT patcher. The streams folder is at C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\ChessBase\Streams. "USERNAME" refers to whatever name you have set up in your own system under "Users". If the streams folder doesn't already exist then create it. Every CBFT DVD has a unique PROT file - you must have that and put it in the "streams" folder. The PROT will always be posted when someone shares a CBFT (except for the "60 minute" series that does not need a prot and also some very old CBFTs did not need one)..
6) VERY IMPORTANT - the streams folder MUST be at the exact location given in (5) – it cannot be anywhere else otherwise it won’t work.
If the Streams folder it doesn't already exist then create it there . NOTE: By default the “AppData” folder is hidden in Windows so in order to be able to see it you must enable to see hidden folders. Open File Explorer select the View tab and, in Advanced settings, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives and OK. Now you can see the app data directory and can make sure your “streams “ folder is in the correct place.
7) NOTE - you should only run the CBFT-Patcher once not for each CBFT you install. In fact if you run the CBFT-Patch a second time it will "un-patch" the program reverting it back to its original state. The only exception to this is if you apply any actual software updates in CB or Fritz then you must re-run the CBFT-Patcher again ONCE after each update. This is unlike the CB-medicine for activating CB or Fritz, which you only ever run once and don't need to re-run even after program updates.
8] READ THIS !!! With the new CBFTs after you install from the EXE installation, you now automatically get a web based app with an icon on your desktop that is a free program CB give you to use to open the CBFT.
DO NOT use that app to access the CBFT !! It has a different protection/security mechanism and cannot read the prot file, so you will always be asked for activation key regardless of if you have run the CBFT_Patcher and have the prot file in your streams folder. This is resulting in people claiming the prot file does not work when it is the correct one. That app can only be used by the original purchaser.
So ignore that app and open the CBFT from within CB, Fritz or free CB Reader itself by doing FILE/OPEN/DATABASE or FILE/OPEN/CHESSMEDIAFILE and navigate to where the CBFT folder is - usually in Documents/Chesssbase/Shop.
